The St John Historical Society was established in 2001 and was formally incorporated as a part of St John Ambulance Australia in 2007. However, important history-related activities had been occurring well before 2001!
There has been a Librarian (i.e. historian) appointed to the Australian Priory for over 60 years, and many states and territories have well-established archives and history groups.
The earliest official Australian first aid class using the association’s syllabus took place in Sydney in 1881. The person responsible was Dr Samuel Knaggs (1842-1921), an Irish born and trained medical
practitioner then practising in Newcastle.
The St. Johns Historical Society is displaying a number of pieces of equipment, booklets and publications as well as photos of some of the Australian history of the organisation in this exhibition.
The exhibition is running throughout the months of July and August in the Caboolture Historical Village visitor reception centre.
